What we do

Plankton Energy is a Turnkey commercial solar development firm. We originate, engineer, interconnect, install, commission, own and operate commercial solar systems delivering economic and environmental value to our clients.

Become stewards of environmental sustainability.

What is solar energy, and how does it work?

Solar energy is electricity generated from sunlight captured by solar panels. Solar panels, or photovoltaic modules, can be installed on rooftops, parking lots and decks, and on open land.

Over the lifetime of a solar energy system, from manufacturing to recycling components at the end of their life, solar produces approximately 11 times less equivalent carbon emissions than electricity derived from natural gas (NREL, LCA Harmonization reports).

Installation Options

Plankton Energy designs, procures, installs, and operates the solar panels on your property.

commercial rooftop solar installation

Rooftop

Rooftop solar is the most cost effective method to install solar, maximizing your savings. Solar panels are installed on the roof of your building and generate electricity onsite. Our rooftop systems are engineered to meet and exceed all building codes, maintain your roof warranty, and to perform optimally for the life of the system.

commercial parking canopy solar

Parking Canopy

Solar parking canopies provide the dual benefit of covered parking and onsite clean energy generation. Plankton Energy installs the canopies with solar panels over your parking lot. Solar Parking Canopies allow you to make a public statement of your commitment to environmental sustainability.

commercial community solar project

Community Solar

Community Solar enables households and businesses to subscribe to a shared solar project and receive credits on their electricity bills — without needing panels on their own property. By hosting Community Solar, you support energy access and cost savings for your local community while advancing your own sustainability goals.

Why do commercial facilities choose a hybrid solar power system to reduce demand charges?
Demand charges are based on your single highest point of usage, not your actual energy consumption and and they often end up as more than half of a commercial customer’s utility bill. A hybrid solar power system cuts down this peak usage by pairing solar generation with battery storage. By using stored energy to "shave" those expensive spikes, businesses can significantly reduce their demand charges and gain control over Time-of-Use (TOU) rate structures. Plankton Energy evaluates each client's specific load profile and utility tariff to ensure a hybrid system maximizes project ROI and provides reliable backup power during grid disruptions.

What is a solar canopy parking lot and how does it generate value for commercial properties?
A solar canopy parking lot—also called a solar carport or solar parking canopy—is a structure built over parking areas that supports solar panels overhead. For commercial properties with large surface parking lots, solar canopies unlock otherwise underutilized land for energy generation without consuming additional space. They deliver the same financial benefits as rooftop solar (ITC, MACRS depreciation, energy savings) while also providing covered parking, EV charging infrastructure compatibility, and a visible sustainability feature for tenants and customers. Plankton Energy designs and develops commercial solar canopies for retail centers, distribution facilities, and corporate campuses.

Why is commercial rooftop solar one of the highest-returning investments for property owners?
Commercial rooftop solar is one of the highest-returning capital investments available to property owners today. By converting unused roof space into a long-term energy asset, businesses reduce operating costs, improve NOI, and strengthen property valuations. The federal Investment Tax Credit (ITC) and MACRS bonus depreciation significantly reduce net project cost, while long-term electricity savings provide predictable, inflation-hedged cash flows. Additionally, as tenants and institutional investors increasingly demand ESG performance from commercial real estate, rooftop solar installations provide a measurable, reportable sustainability credential. Plankton Energy specializes exclusively in commercial rooftop solar across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic.
